The station is a unique venue where passing trains remind one of its historic use and set the stage for railroad-theme events. With the restoration of the station to its 1945 opening day appearance, visitors will enjoy the improved look of this transportation landmark. New amenities include a handicapped-accessible entrance and restroom, air-conditioning, the restored 1945 passenger waiting room furniture, bicycle rack and historical exhibits.

The baggage room and agent/operator's office are leased to Class Acts Arts, a nonprofit arts outreach organization.

The station - one of only two 20th century B&O stations extant in Maryland - represents the evolution of Silver Spring from a small country town centered around the railroad depot to a major transportation, retail and residential suburb. Located just seven miles from the U.S. Capitol, the station served the commuter and long-distance needs of suburban residents for over 50 years, and the station site represents more than 120 years of continuous passenger rail service by the B&O, Amtrak and MARC rail lines.
