Montgomery
County's rich heritage
takes us back to rural tobacco farming, slavery, and the call for
freedom. Our nation's history is echoed in the urban and suburban growth
which has followed. We discover this history in our old railroad stations
and the businesses that developed beside them, in the African-American
churches and the communities that surround them, in our older schools and
institutions, and in the Potomac River
and wooded areas that tell of our earliest days.
Our communities showcase wonderful examples of Painted Lady Queen Annes, straightforward bungalows, art deco
storefronts, farmhouses, slave cabins, and mansions dating back to the
Federalist period. Montgomery Preservation Inc. celebrates the diversity
of physical features that work together to make Montgomery County
special by working to keep them a part of our cultural landscape.
Montgomery Preservation's primary commitment is to educate our
community about how to best preserve this heritage. We are always happy
to have new people with an interest in forming a local preservation group
in the County come to us for assistance. As a network of
preservationists, we share information, such as new state tax incentives,
current trends (such as community preservation districts), new laws (such
as demolition notices), and legal decisions relating to current issues of
interest (such as Jessup
Blair Park
or the Carver Educational Site). We also educate the public through
advocacy and outreach programs that include an annual list of the most endangered historic sites
and awards for excellent restoration
projects.
