Nov. B&O Station Open House Featuring the Silver Spring Historical Society Offered a Look Back in Time

Special Guest: Jerry A. McCoy, President of the Silver Spring Historical Society and author of Historic Silver Spring and Downtown Silver Spring

1931 Klinge and 1961 Sanborn fire insurance plat mapsJerry offered visitors the opportunity to view bound volumes of the rare 1931 Klinge and 1961 Sanborn fire insurance plat maps that include downtown Silver Spring and the nearby surrounding Maryland neighborhoods. He looked up their address so people could take a photo of the page and amaze their family and friends.

Many people were curious about what the built environment looked like 64 or 94 years ago around their Silver Spring-area home, street or neighborhood and visited the B&O Station to take advantage of this opportunity.

MPI Congratulates Morningstar Tabernacle No. 88 on the Return of Historic Cemetery Land

According to Friends of Moses Hall, “In a landmark action six decades in the making, the Maryland Board of Public Works has approved the return of cemetery land to the descendants of Morningstar Tabernacle No. 88 in Cabin John, Maryland. The action, approved on October 22, returns a portion of Maryland state highway land along the I-495 Capital Beltway right-of-way to the Morningstar Tabernacle No. 88 Moses Cemetery and Hall, long recognized as sacred ground for generations of African American families in the region. Once taken by eminent domain in the early 1960s for construction of the Capital Beltway, the restored parcel—less than a quarter-acre—may hold as many as 26 unmarked graves of those buried at Morningstar Moses Cemetery.”
