Hometown Treasures: Capital Region
Your Family’s Treasures Have a Story. Learn How to Preserve It.
On September 18 and 19, the Smithsonian’s National Museum of African American History and Culture, Glenstone Museum, and the Juneteenth Scotland Foundation will present Hometown Treasures: Capital Region, a free two-day experience at the Bette Carol Thompson Scotland Neighborhood Recreation Center.
Bring up to three treasured family items to meet one-on-one with a preservation professional. Items can include photographs, letters, books, quilts, clothing, family records, military memorabilia, and other cherished heirlooms. During your review, you’ll learn more about your items and receive practical guidance on how to care for and preserve them for generations to come.
Friday, September 18, 2026 from 12:00pm to 7:00pm and Saturday, September 19, 2026 from 11:00am to 5:00pm

You do not need to reserve a one-on-one review to take part in Hometown Treasures.
Drop in throughout the weekend for the Community Expo, family activities, digitization, quilting demonstrations, DIY preservation resources, and programming focused on heritage, generational wealth, and wellness.
You can also join expert-led workshops on preserving family photographs, papers, stories, and local history, along with special programming celebrating Montgomery County’s historic Black communities.
