Silver Spring B&O Station April Open House: Our Model Train Is Back on Track!

MPI is grateful to the Rockville Model Railroad Society (RMRS) for countless hours spent maintaining our beloved railway model for 25+ years.
The HO scale model train display features miniature people, tunnels, bridges, mountains, a haunted house, and tiny trains that chug around the clover-loop track. The model was built by RMRS (formerly the Silver Spring Model Railroad Society) for a 1989 holiday showcase at the National Geographic’s Exhibitors’ Hall. This model resided for 17 years at the Gaithersburg Community Museum before its now permanent move to the Historic Silver Spring B&O Railroad Station.
Fred Schirrmacher (pictured) maintained the train model on behalf of RMRS and all the wide-eyed children who visited the Gaithersburg museum and Silver Spring station.
Other Activities:
- Take a self-guided tour outside & inside the station.
- “Train Spot” under the canopy! See locomotives galore! Wave at the engineers!
- Play with wooden toy train sets.
- Visit the station manager’s ticket office and 1945 telephone booth.
- See railroad photos & memorabilia, including the original B&O Drumhead, along with photos & memorabilia of the original Downtown Silver Spring.
This Station is a Montgomery County Historic Site, listed in the National Register of Historic Places, and a gem in Silver Spring’s Arts & Entertainment District.
Please note that because of contractor equipment using the lot, the number of available parking spaces will be limited. There is a special needs space and ramp at the station. Additional parking is available at county garage and lot #4 (8100 Fenton St.) that is one block from the station. Traffic and crosswalk lights facilitate crossing Georgia Avenue at Sligo Avenue in front of the station.
